ST2936 : Bridgwater and Taunton Canal by Ken Grainger
  TRIVIA Corner

Why is there no e in Bridgwater ?

In the beginning the town was simply called Brigg (Saxon for Quayside).

William the Conqueror gave the town to Walter from Douai France, so the town became Brigg of Walter or Briggwalter.

So in fact there is a missing 'l' from Walter but no missing 'e'.
